Mustafa Avcı completed his undergraduate degree in the Department of Economics at Boğaziçi University. After his graduation, he changed track and earned his master's degree in ethnomusicology at ITU MIAM. In 2007, he was accepted as a graduate student at New York University GSAS Music Department and got his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in 2015. His research focuses on gender, music, dance, and the soundscapes of the Ottoman Empire and Contemporary Turkey. He is an award-winning film music composer and also composed music for theater. As a contemporary artist, he participated in a variety of events with his installations, compositions and sound art.
